This account mainly describes our recent achievement in synthetic chromogenic receptors which are characterized by combined "recognition" and "optical sensing" functions. The focus is on the preparation and some intriguing properties of several 1,1′-binaphthyl-derived calix[4]crowns; the hydrophobic microenvironment and axially asymmetry of the binaphthyl unit endow those with some unexpected reactivities, as well as novel molecular recognition properties. In this latter case, the corresponding chromogenic receptor was found to have the potential as a molecular sensor capable of translating chiral recognition events into discernible color changes. The utility of the binaphthyl unit as a key synthon is discussed from the standpoint of developing synthetic receptors in the field of supramolecular chemistry.
