Methods for the introduction of more than one amino function in monosaccharidic sugars are surveyed. These depend mainly on displacement reactions by nitrogenous nucleophiles, directly or via cyclic intermediates, viz. epoxides, aziridines, 1,3-oxazolines, and 1,3-oxazolones. The versatility of nitro sugars as synthetic precursors of polyamino monosaccharides is discussed.
