Significance

An alkyne-cobalt complex was employed to control diastereoselective allylation of a chiral 4-substituted ynal (1,4-asymmetric induction). The closer proximity of C-5 and C-8 in the cobalt complex C is the key for achieving a high diastereoselectivity. The basic concept has been applied to a formal synthesis of fostriecin.
