Various aliphatic, aromatic and heterocyclic aldehydes were efficiently transformed to the corresponding nitriles in a one-pot procedure by nickel-catalyzed oxidation with tetrabutylammonium peroxydisulfate in the presence of ammonium hydrogen carbonate under basic aqueous conditions. The process affords excellent yields of pure nitriles.
