The reactions of diphosphatricyclooctenes 9 with bromine (10 a) or iodine chloride (10 b) proceed by selective cleavage of the phosphorus-phosphorus bond of the diphosphirane unit with formation of the diphosphabicyclooctenes 11. On reaction of 11 a with one equivalent of nonacarbonyldiiron (12) metal complexation of one phosphorus center (→ 13 a) is achieved. The constitution of the η 1-complex 13 a was confirmed by X-ray crystallography.
