A variety of disulfides can be synthesized conveniently from thioacetates via the nickel boride (Ni2B) catalyzed methanolysis of thioacetates to the corresponding thiols and the subsequent disproportionation of the resulting thiols by the same catalyst. This process proceeds quantitatively under mild and neutral conditions without the use of oxidizing agents.
