Two new [2.2]biphenylophanes, (3,3’)- and (3,5’)-ones (4a and 4b), were readily synthesized by the intermolecular [2+2] photocycloaddition of 4,4’-dimethoxy-3,3’-divinylbiphenyl (3). They exhibited quite different absorption spectra from each other, due to the difference in the dihedral angle of the biphenyl units between 4a and 4b.
