Reactions of imines 1 (2 eq.) with phenylmethanesulfonyl chloride 3 (1 eq.) followed by hydrolysis with 3 N-HCl provided ß-keto and ß-formyl sulfones in moderate to good yields under mild conditions. The process would involve a sulfene intermediate.
