Photoreaction of strategically designed annulated bicyclo[2.2.2]octenone 8 and 9 having α-methoxy-β,γ-unsaturated carbonyl chromophore is described. The 1,2-acyl shift intermediate 11 has been isolated during irradiation of 9 and its intermediacy has been proved in the photoreaction. Synthesis of a potential precursor to oxygenated capnellanes via selective photoreaction of 8 is reported.
