Cyclic ethers and amines with 3-, 5- and 6-membered rings are easily formed from the corresponding diols or amino alcohols, using triphenylphosphonium anhydride ((Ph3P+)2O, 2OTf-]. The reagent is simply prepared in situ from triphenylphosphonium oxide and trifluoromethanesulfonic anhydride, and the cyclodehydration generally proceeds in good yield at room temperature.
