A synthesis of the bis-oleandrose fragment of avermectin B1a (1) is described, involving π-allyl tricarbonyliron lactone complexes as key synthetic intermediates. Final glycosidation to the aglycone employed the use of an imidazolylthiocarbonyl glycoside, to conclude the total synthesis of avermectin B1a.
