Geminal bis-onio substitution in systems with highly electrophilic trigonal carbon centers can be achieved by means of the reagent pair 4-dimethylaminopyridine/ trimethylsilyltriflate. Structural features of these novel electrophiles are discussed on the basis of spectroscopic and theoretical data.
