d,l-exo-Brevicomin is obtained from meso-divinylglycol via bis-O-benzylation, selective ω-hydroxylation of one double bond, oxidation of the hydroxymethyl group to the aldehyde stage, chain extension at the aldehyde function by Wittig reaction, and hydrogenation under loss of CC-double bonds and O-benzyl protective groups with concomitant ring closure.
