Die Peritonealdialyse hat sich in den letzten Jahren zu einem der Hämodialyse ebenbürtigen, für bestimmte Patientengruppen möglicherweise sogar überlegenen Verfahren der Nierenersatztherapie etabliert. Bei etwa einem Drittel der Patienten, die dialysepflichtig werden, ist der Diabetes als Ursache der Nierenerkrankung anzusehen [15]. Der Anteil der Diabetiker ist in der Altersklasse der 60 - 79-Jährigen am höchsten [7]. Insgesamt gewinnt der Diabetes mellitus immer mehr an Bedeutung.
