Significance

This work describes the cationic polymerization of epoxides photoinitiated by a ruthenium(II) complex. A series of electron-transfer events generates a silyl radical, which is subsequently oxidized to a silylium cation and initiates the polymerization. The efficiency of the photo-initiating system is evident by the fast conversions of monomers - 60% in four minutes.
