Abstract

Cyclization of a deprotonated N-monosubstituted α-aminonitrile obtained by Strecker reaction of a protected 2-aminobenzaldehyde with ethyl 2-aminocinnamate serves as the key step in a short synthesis of the tetracyclic ε-lactam paullone.
