Intramolecular cycloaddition reactions are of paramount importance in synthesis. Steric effects are extremely important in either helping or hindering such reactions and this paper reviews progress from initial observations at the turn of the century to present ideas on conformational control. Steric buttressing is an extremely simple method for encouraging difficult reactions. The effects of external factors are also briefly covered.
