Reaction of dialkynylelementa species with cationic platinum hydride compounds provides a new route to complexes containing exoalkylidene-1-elementacyclobutenyl ligands. The successful formation of such heterocycles has been extended to five main group elements including carbon. The results of preliminary mechanistic studies are consistent with a unified proposed mechanism for the formation of these heterocyclic systems.
