4-Arylpyridines 5 which contain an electron-withdrawing group on the benzene ring were synthesized in moderate yields by reaction of mixed copper/zinc aryl organometallics 1 with various 1-(ethoxycarbonyl)pyridinium chlorides 2 followed by o-chloranil oxidization under reflux in toluene.
