Sodium and potassium hydrides in dimethylformamide react on the benzylic hydrogens of dibenzyl diselenides and lead, depending upon the structure of the starting material, to a large variety of compounds. The formation of most of them is compatible with the intermediary formation of a selone. All our efforts aimed to isolate or to trap such an intermediate proved to be unsuccessful.
