This review describes the synthetic uses of the photochemical hydroxylation of aromatic compounds. Direct hydroxylation methods, including the reactions with hydroxyl radicals and atomic oxygen and the photochemical hydrolysis of substituents on the aromatic ring are discussed. 1. Direct Hydroxylation 1.1. Hydroxylation with Photochemically Generated Hydroxyl Radicals 1.2. Hydroxylation with Photochemically Generated Atomic-Oxygen 1.3. Hydroxylation by Photooxygenation 2. Photochemical Hydrolysis of Substituents on Aromatic Rings 2.1. Aromatic Diazonium Salts 2.2. Aromatic Halides 2.3. Nitrobenzene Derivatives 2.4. Other Aromatic Compounds 3. Miscellaneous Methods
