The Mukaiyama condensation of 2,4-bis(trimethylsilyloxy)-1,3-pentadienes with aldehydes and ketones in the presence of excess titanium(IV) chloride provides direct entry to functionalized 2,3-dihydro-4H-pyran-4-ones in good yield.
