The synthesis of enantiomerically pure potassium (5R)- and (5S)-trans-2-tert-butyl-6-hydroxymethyloxapenem-3-carboxylates is reported. Surprisingly, both enantiomers were active antibiotics and ß-lactamase inhibitors.
