The palladium-catalyzed coupling of 2-amidoacrylates with aryl iodides under phase-transfer conditions yields aromatic (Z)-didehydroamino acid derivatives, which give various protected aromatic amino acids via catalytic hydrogenation using Pd/C or the Wilkinson catalyst.
