Lactones, lactams, and thiollactones, both unsubstituted and containing reactive substituents, are useful starting materials in the synthesis of various types of heterocyclic organic compounds. The use of suitably substituted lactones, lactams, and thiollactones is particularly favorable in the synthesis of polycyclic heterocyclic systems.
