Abstract

The first intramolecular Friedel-Crafts reaction of the Baylis-Hillman adducts using P2O5 leading to the formation of functionalized indene derivatives and subsequent hydrogenation providing indane derivatives have been described.

Other reagents, e. g., p-TsOH and TiCl4 provided the required indene derivative in trace amounts only.
