Significance
The authors report an enantioselective monobenzoylation of meso-1,2-diols catalyzed by truncated cinchona alkaloid 1. Catalyst 1 can be synthesized from quinine in four steps. Moderate to high yields and enantiomeric ratios are achieved with low catalyst loadings (2 mol%).
