Significance

Alumina-supported CeCl3 ×7H2O-NaI catalyst for the cyclization of 2′-aminochalcones 1 giving 2,3-dihydroquinoline derivatives 2 was described. Thus, treatment of neutral alumina with CeCl3×7H2O and NaI in MeCN gave the alumina-supported CeCl3×7H2O-NaI. The intramolecular aza-Michael reaction of 2′-aminochalcones 1 was carried out in the presence of the alumina-supported CeCl3×7H2O-NaI at 70 °C under solvent-free conditions to give the corresponding 2-aryl-2,3-dihydroquinolin-4(1H)-ones 2 in 83-98% yield.
