Significance

The authors disclose a mild and efficient procedure for a C-P bond formation. This robust copper-catalyzed reaction proceeds by a direct coupling of phenylboronic acids and phosphonate diesters. The source of metal is the convenient and relatively inexpensive copper(I) oxide. Various functional groups and electron-donating or -withdrawing substituents are tolerated on the boronic acid moiety.
