Significance

The authors describe the host-guest chemistry between 4-aminobipyridine derivatives and cucurbit[6]uril. The inclusion complexes show dramatic enhancements both in fluorescence intensity and quantum yields. Due to the ­reversibility of the complexation process, this ­effect can be used for the determination of binding constants and kinetic parameters in cascades of binding networks. This system can also be used for chemical sensing of transition metals and other ligands with relevance in biocatalysis.
