Abstract

Background: Force posturography is used to quantify body sway. However, so far there exist only a limited number of studies assessing the method’s parameters.

Objective: This literature review investigated the evidence of the method’s reliability. Its aim is to give recommendations in view of the method’s applicability in physiotherapy research.

Method: The database research for reliability studies and reviews was carried out for the years 1995 - 2006. The reliability’s methodological quality and statistic evaluation were assessed.

Results: Of the 11 studies meeting the inclusion criteria none was excluded due to insufficient methodological quality. Because of considerable variations in study population, test protocols and calculated parameters of the selected articles it was not possible to identify the method as reliable or not reliable.

Conclusion: As the value of force posturography remains uncertain each test protocol’s reliability should at first be assessed.
