Significance

Ecteinascidin 597 is a putative biogenetic precursor to ecteinascidin 743 which is in phase III clinical trials for the treatment of some cancers. A key step is the TMSBr-promoted macrocyclization of the thiol derived from D to form the 10-membered ring.
