1 Digital Imaging and Communications in Medicine (DICOM) is a comprehensive set of
standards for handling, storing, printing and transmitting information in medical
imaging.
2 HL7 = Health Level Seven is one of several American National Standards Institute
(ANSI)-accredited Standards Developing Organizations (SDOs) operating in the healthcare
arena. Most SDOs produce standards for a particular healthcare domain.
3 DSL is a technology that provides digital data transmission over the wires of a local
telephone network, which provides high bandwith by low costs.
4 Asynchronous Transfer Mode (ATM) is a network protocol which encodes data traffic
into small fixed-sized (53 byte; 48 bytes of data and 5 bytes of header information)
cells instead of variable sized frames as in packet-switched networks (such as the Internet Protocol or Ethernet). It is
a connection-oriented technology in which a connection is established between the
two endpoints before the actual data exchange begins.
5 VPN = A virtual private network (VPN) is a private communications network used within
one or by several companies to communicate over a public network (e. g. the internet)
via standard (often insecure) protocols.
6 Secure Socket Layer (SSL) is a cryptographic protocol which provides secure communications
on the Internet for such things as e-mail, internet faxing, data transfer to/from
online poker clients, and so forth.
