Abstract
A case of transverse colon volvulus in a 10-year-old female child with trisomy 13
is reported, bringing the total number of cases of children reported in the English
language medical literature to 14. Although this type of volvulus is rare, a definite
pattern is noticeable, so we should suspect its diagnosis in a patient with chronic
constipation, mental retardation and motor disturbances. Resection of the involved
segment and primary anastomosis is the definite treatment.
Résumé
Un cas de volvulus du côlon transverse chez une fillette de 10 ans avec une trisomie
13 est rapportée, portant le nombre total de cas d'enfant avec cette pathologie dans
la littérature médicale de langue anglaise à 14. Bien que ce type de volvulus soit
rare, un tableau clinique peut être défini tel que le diagnostic peut être suspecté
devant une constipation chronique, un retard mental et des troubles moteurs. La résection
du segment concerné et une anastomose primaire est le traitement définitif.
Resumen
Presentamos el caso de un vólvulo del colon transverso en una niña de 10 años con
trisomía 13 que corresponde al número 14 de los publicados en la literatura en lengua
inglesa. Aunque este tipo de vólvulo es raro, el patrón clínico es bastante uniforme
por lo que debemos sospechar este diagnóstico en pacientes con estreñimiento crónico,
retraso mental y trastornos motores. La resección del segmento afecto y la anastomosis
primaria son un buen tratamiento definitivo.
Zusammenfassung
Es wird der Fall eines zehnjährigen Mädchens mit einem Volvulus des Colon transversum
vorgestellt. Das Kind litt außerdem unter einer Trisomie 13. Insgesamt sind in der
englischsprachigen Literatur 14 Fälle mit einem Volvulus des Colon transversum und
Trisomie 13 berichtet worden. Es ist daher notwendig, bei mentaler Retardierung, chronischer
Obstipation und Motilitätsstörungen an dieses Krankheitsbild zu denken. Die Therapie
resultiert in einer Resektion des gedrehten Darmsegmentes mit primärer Anastomose.
