For establishing a diagnosis a more or less exact knowledge of the subjective and objective characteristics of a disease (symptoms and signs) and of the (relative) frequency of their occurrence is indispensable. Knowledge of these factors has to be looked upon not only as a means towards “electronic diagnostics”, but also as an essential element of modern clinical medicine. Consequently, by precising, classifying and carefully considering these factors a more accurate differentiation of diseases will be made possible.

But for this purpose a far reaching synchronization as to contents and terminology of diagnosticai terms and completely accurate methods of inquiry lacking all systematic errors have to be brought about. These will be the preconditions for research projects of the kind that can be carried out solely on a supraregional level.
