Ziel: Der Artikel vermittelt Physiotherapeuten Grundkenntnisse vergleichender gesundheitsökonomischer Evaluationen.

Abstract

Background: Since the year 2000 there has been a growing interest in health economic evaluations of physiotherapeutic interventions and in future this trend will continue.

Objective: This article imparts the basic knowledge of health economic evaluations to physiotherapists.

Method: This methodological manuscript describes the following health economic topics using examples of physiotherapy publications: cost-benefit analysis, cost-effectiveness analysis, cost-utility analysis, cost calculation, incremental cost-effectiveness ratio (ICER), cost-effectiveness diagram, study designs, decision models (decision tree and Markov model), sensitivity analysis, time horizon and discounting and quality assessment of published health economic evaluations.

Results/Conclusions: Basic knowledge of terms, methods and interpretation of health economic evaluations may offer physiotherapists a more frank attitude towards this often unfamiliar aspect. In addition, it provides a reliable background for a more intensive discussion on this subject.
