Abstract

Heating N-(2-methoxyphenyl)benzenecarbothioamides in refluxing nitrobenzene for 24 hours gives the corresponding benzothiazoles with intramolecular ipso substitution of the ortho-methoxy substituent. The thermal cyclization of various other N-arylthiobenzamides is also explored.
