Thoracoscopic Removal of a Bulky Cystic Mediastinal Mature Teratoma in a 4-Year-Old Child: Report of One Case and Few Surgical Tricks

Background

In the past decade, thoracoscopy has gained acceptance as the treatment of choice to perform increasingly complex procedures both for diagnostic and therapeutic purposes in the management of thoracic and mediastinal disease.[1] However, even if in the adult literature there is wide documentation of thoracoscopic removal of bulky mediastinal masses by the thoracoscopic approach, fewer reports are present in the pediatric literature concerning removal of bulky mediastinal mature teratomas.[2] [3] [4]

In children the mediastinum is the fourth most common site for teratomas, after the ovary, sacrococcygeal region and testis and the great majority of teratomas is mature benign neoplasm.

The purpose of this article is to report about the feasibility of thoracoscopic removal of one large cystic mediastinal teratoma in a 4-year-old child.
