Significance

Coumarins are one of the most widely used classes of fluorescent dyes and have found applications in organic light-emitting diodes, optical brighteners, and fluorescent labels. The authors present a convenient one-pot synthesis of 3-vinylcoumarins 3. The π-electron system can be further extended by Heck coupling with aryl halides leading to a variety of substituted coumarin dyes 4.
