Significance

The authors synthesized the hydrocarbon radicals stabilized predominantly by a thermodynamic factor. The large extent of delocalization of an unpaired electron suppresses σ-bond formation between the radicals. Instead, the radical forms a π-dimer in the solid state via multicenter bonding of the unpaired electrons.
