Significance

In this work the first example of a copper(II)-catalyzed oxidative cyclization of enynes is disclosed. This 6-exo-trig cyclization reaction is facilitated by Ce(SO4)2 and uses molecular oxygen as oxidant. A variety of substituents on the substrates are tolerated under the mild reaction conditions. The obtained 1,4-naphthoquinones are important structural units in natural products.
