Significance

The authors synthesized a fused-seven-ring anthracene derivative with two sulfur bridges, benzobisthioxanthene (BTA), in three steps from commercially available 9,10-dibromoanthracene. The key step is the acid-induced condensation of the aromatic methyl sulfoxides (2 → BTA), which proceeds in good yield (67%).
