Significance

The first general palladium-catalyzed cyanation of aryl mesylates and tosylates is disclosed. The reaction proceeds under very mild conditions and tolerates functional groups, such as esters, ketones, and aldehydes. The use of water as solvent or co-solvent was found to be essential.
