Practical Enantioselective One-Pot Syntheses of β-Hydroxy and β-Amino Esters

Significance

A practical and efficient one-pot synthesis of β-amino and β-hydroxy esters via epoxidation or aziridination followed by an internal redox reaction is described. Jørgensen and co-workers obtained the desired products in good yields and high enantioselectivities with low catalyst loadings (1-2.5 mol%). The authors also show the synthetic utility of this organocatalysis sequence.
