Significance

A protocol for the synthesis of benzylboronic pinacol esters from benzylic halides is disclosed. This one-pot procedure is simple, clean and efficient, whereby the coupling step does not require any transition-metal catalyst. Magnesium, as the only metal involved, is only used in catalytic amounts (10 mol%).
