Significance

The topochemical polymerization of diacetylene macrocycle 1 is described. In the crystal 1 is stacked in columns organized by amide-amide hydrogen bonds. The arrangement provides optimal geometrical preconditions for a topochemical polymerization. Heating crystals of 1 induces changes that suggest the formation of polydiacetylenes.
