Significance

The copper(I)-catalyzed addition of organomagnesium reagents to in situ derived N-sulfonyl azoalkenes was shown to result in an umpolung alkylation enabling the synthesis of ­extremely sterically hindered compounds that cannot be accessed via the traditional enolate chemistry.
