Die Niere in der Bibel

Zusammenfassung

In der Bibel, speziell im Alten, seltener im Neuen Testament, werden an zahlreichen Stellen - oft im Zusammenhang mit dem Herzen - die Nieren erwähnt: sie werden metaphorisch betrachtet als Sitz der Gefühle, der Unterscheidung von Gut und Böse, der innersten Gedanken und geheimsten Absichten, deren Beurteilung nur Gott zugänglich ist. Die ältesten Zitate welche auf die Niere Bezug nehmen belegen, dass die Autoren der Bibel, wie später auch die Autoren des Talmud, detailliert mit Anatomie und teilweise auch Pathologie der Nieren (und des perirenalen Fetts) von Opfertieren vertraut waren, allerdings ohne deren Rolle in der Produktion des Urins zu erkennen.

Mit dem Vordringen des wissenschaftlichen Rationalismus und der Griechisch-Römischen Vorstellung, der Sitz seelischer Vorgänge sei das Hirn, ging in Literatur und volkstümlichen Vorstellungen der Gedanke verloren, die Niere sei der Ort seelischer Vorgänge. Deshalb werden heute die biblischen Hinweise auf die Niere nicht mehr verstanden, während interessanterweise der Gedanke einer Verknüpfung des Herzens mit seelischenVorgängen heute noch weiterlebt.

Summary

In the bible, particularly in the old testament, more rarely in the new testament, one finds many passages mentioning the kidney - mostly together with the heart. The kidneys were a symbol for, and thought to be the seat of, the most intimate feelings, thoughts, intentions which only the Lord was thought able to assess. Even the oldest references to the kidney in the old testament indicate that the authors, as well as later the authors of the Talmud, were intimately familiar with the anatomy and some pathology of the kidney (and perirenal fat) without recognizing, however, its role in urine production.

With the advance of scientific rationalism the concept of Greek and Roman authors prevailed that the brain is the seat of consciousness and thoughts.The idea of the kidney as the seat of thoughts and emotions was lost and disappeared from literature and folklore, whilst interestingly, the idea of the heart as the seat of emotions is still very much alive.
