Prevention of Osteoporosis

Osteoporosis is a leading cause of death and disability among elderly Caucasian women. Implementation of a rational prevention strategy has a high public health priority in industrialized nations. It should consider age, sex and individual fracture risk and hence consists of a combination of general, selective and indicated preventive measures. Individual fracture risk assessment plays a key role for indicated prevention and requires the dissemination of inexpensive, valid questionnaire-based assessment tools.
