A convenient method is reported for the purification of 3- or 3,8-bromo-phenanthroline and their transformation in methoxy- and hydroxy-derivatives. These latter compounds are convenient precursors for the synthesis of new phenanthroline derivatives substituted at C3 or C3 and C8.
